Seasons of Waiting

June 12, 2018

Filed in: FAITH

It’s 2:00 pm on a Tuesday afternoon in the middle of a corporate office, and I’m feeling stuck. Lunch has already ended and I still have hours to go until I’m done for the day—and the week isn’t even half over yet.

Have you ever felt like you’re in a season of waiting? When you keep praying and praying to God for the next step in your life and it hasn’t happened yet? When no matter how much you work towards something, the stars just aren’t aligning? Or maybe you even feel like you’re waiting for something and you don’t know what it is yet.

I think we’ve alllllllll been there. No matter how big or how small this dream is, we have a glimpse of what we want our lives to look like, and oftentimes we’re impatient waiting to get there.

Sometimes it’s extra hard because you know the Bible says ‘Ask, and you shall receive’ and yet it still hasn’t happened to you yet. (Chances are you’re thinking of an example right now!) And what makes this even worse? When you see the people around you reaching milestones or achieving a goal of theirs. You might feel like you’re the only one being called to a season of waiting—(and trust me social media does an incredible job of making it look that way unfortunately) But I’m here to tell you that we’re all in line for God’s blessings, teachings, discernment and plans for our lives.

You see, it was at 2:00pm in a corporate office when I stood at the elevator and realized it wasn’t going to stop for me first.

Yes–I had been there waiting, and waiting, and waiting, (longer than usual too!) and I knew it wasn’t that the elevator wasn’t ever going to stop for me—it was just that the elevator was going to stop for someone else first.

This is a lot like what seasons of waiting can look like. I thought that since I pressed the button, the elevator was going to come to me, and come to me now. I thought that since prayed about the new opportunity I wanted in life, the new opportunity was going to present itself to me, and present itself to me now.

But the operator knows it can’t go up a floor until it goes down 2 floors and then stops and pauses and continues in it’s order.

And God knows He wants to have this person meet that person, and have some stop and pause and then continue in His order.

And yes, sometimes seasons of waiting can be frustrating or upsetting, but you wanna know the best part? His order is always better than ours.

So here’s what I want you to do, I want you to envision where you want to go in the next season of your life. Is it a new job or church community? Is it overcoming your depression? Is it more time gardening or painting? Is it finally buying that car you’ve always wanted or moving into an apartment? Is it reconnecting with old friends or family members?

Envision it. Now take a deep breath and pray about it. (And pray about it, and pray about it!) There’s power in prayer—but there’s also power in knowing that prayer doesn’t follow your timeline.

Envision it. And with peace and gratitude in your soul, know that when your heart’s desires are aligned with His will, and His timing is right, God will open your elevator door.
